UAE had come up with a request to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for making maritime fraternity a field where gender equity is maintained. This move is to ensure that women also get equal work opportunities as men in the industry. The IMO passed IMO resolution on “Preserving the legacy of the World Maritime theme for 2019 and Achieving a Barrier-Free Working Environment for Women in the Maritime Sector.”

The decision strives towards achieving the fifth goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. UAE based Aries Group of Companies CEO, Dr. Sohan Roy, welcomed the resolution and assured his full support. He commented that the gender imbalance seen in the marine world today is mainly due to the lack of unawareness of women’s opportunities available in the field. He has always pitched in for treating women in his organization equally. “As far as I know, the industry is willing to absorb females, but very few come forward to accept it. If a certain percentage of slots are optionally reserved for females, it will definitely create awareness about the opportunities. Personally speaking, we provide equal status to all female employees in our organization. I have twin daughters, and both are Naval Architects.

They never faced any kind of difficulty in getting absorbed by the Maritime Industry. In fact, the one working in the UK and was the first to get selected through campus interview.” mentioned Dr. Roy. He also added that it is the outlook of the people towards the maritime sector that really needs a change.
